3’short film, 2024
sound &amp; image by Emilio Tamburini

selected at Bellaria Film Festival 2024 in the category “3 minuti a tema fisso”WATCH

	From a train window, Line of Flight depicts the obstacle course of an optical artifact through the industrial landscape of the Po Valley, one of the most polluted areas in Europe. Whether self-destruction or metamorphosis, its vanishing point points to the interdependence between humans and their environment.

	The Music Inn is one of the oldest music stores in New York City. It preserves, sells and restores traditional instruments from around the world. This film takes us on a journey through sound as it emerges from the encounter between musical instruments and humans. Along the way, we get to know the characters who keep this space alive as a haven for playfulness, community-making and repair.

	<img width="3840" height="2160" width_o="3840" height_o="2160" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6ace288d93dba4d4fd7c9850278e3e889c4d4ce570ad5c80094e4de9a30349f7/still-proposal-2-may-8_1.75.2.jpg" data-mid="250980837" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6ace288d93dba4d4fd7c9850278e3e889c4d4ce570ad5c80094e4de9a30349f7/still-proposal-2-may-8_1.75.2.jpg" />Hilary Brady Morris, organologist and ethnomusicologist, playing the Damian in her workshop at the Music Inn, where she is charge of repairs.
A small business devoted to traditional music, music performances and community making, The Music Inn is a survivor in the increasingly gentrified urban landscape of the West Village. Moreover, it’s the only place in New York City, to Hilary’s knowledge, in which the general public has direct access to a collection of world instruments. “The MET instruments are behind a glass. Here you can touch them, and you can also see their back.” This is why Hilary suggested that the Music Inn, in this film could be represented as “a vehicle to listen to sounds of the world”.

John Cage famously went into an anechoic chamber to discover that silence was not accessible to humans, since in the absolute silence of the room his own bloodstream and cerebral activities produces two distinct, continuous sounds. The Music Inn could be considered like a schizophonic chamber, in which the way we make sense and acquire knowledge through sound can be explored along infinite material and affective trajectories. This film aims at extending the capacity of a place to bring people in relation to musical instruments and the worlds that resonate through them, allowing for a relational understanding of what it means, for humans, to be social and sonic beings.

Jeff Slatnick, longtime owner of the Music Inn

	“Life is one long conversation. More precisely, it is a tangled web of concurrent conversations, all going on at once, that weave into and around one another. They flow, spinning here and there into topics like eddies in a stream. And they have three distinguishing properties. First, conversations are processes: they carry on. Secondly, conversations are open-ended: they do not aim towards a fixed destination or a final conclusion, for everything that might be said invites a follow-on. Thirdly, conversations are dialogical. They are not solitary but go on between and among people. It is from these dialogical engagements that knowledge continually emerges. To join a conversation is to be ever-present at the cusp where ideas are on the point of making their appearance, of taking shape.” (Tim Ingold, Correspondances)

	Video series

Listening to Italian Colonialism is a video series of dialogues with researchers, artists and activists about the role of 1930s radio hits thematizing Ethiopia in Fascist Italy. The racial colonial imaginary produced and reproduced within this sonic memory, and the persistancy of that imaginary in the present day, are the central topics of the dialogues.&nbsp;

	This book presents a collections of sound recordings of Italian prisoners of war, interned in German prison camps during the WWI.

	Made in the field during 1918, these recordings are part of a largest collection that emerged from the work of the Phonographische Kommission, a research team composed of linguists, musicologists, and ethnologists, financed and supported by the highest German institutions with the aim of collecting and archiving the language, music and culture of prisoners of war from all the enemy nations and their colonies. The prisoners were recorded in the prison camps with the sound technologies available at that time: the gramophone, and the phonograph.

	The book is dedicated to the voices of the forty-two Italian military prisoners who where recorded within that context. They came from different places in Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Apulia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Umbria, Veneto and Molise. Most of them were of humble origins. The researchers asked them to perform songs and monologues and to recite given texts in their own dialects.

	This collection witnesses, among other things, the historical attempt to create a new, sound-based ethnology by exploiting the context of war and imprisonment. The voices of the prisoners were captured within a complex intertwinement of scientific practices, nationalistic ideologies, and military institutions. Listening to them means to hear and to deal with the power of an archive that, making use of a coercive condition, labels and catalogues human beings as representatives of cultural or ethnical groups.

	At the very same, the voice, sound of a living human body, vibrates in these recordings as a political presence which cannot be tamed. The sounding alterity of the persona, in the very act of speaking or singing, actively claims its own agency, touches the body of the listeners, and thus physically call the listeners themselves into question. Listening to these recordings thus can turn out to be an intimate and troubling experience, which reframes our sonic awareness and raises historical and ethical questions by locating them at the very center of a sonic bodily relation.

	The volume is the result of many years of research, carried out by Ignazio Macchiarella for the musicological side and by Emilio Tamburini for the historical-cultural side. The four CDs attached contains the corpus of the archival documents in its entirety: the digitalized sound materials and the scans of documents, with data of the recorded prisoners and transcriptions of the pieces they performed.
